The end of another year. It’s been a good one for me.
In November, I celebrated my 55th birthday. On that same day, I released Version 1.0 of Behold.
This year, my wife and I celebrated our 30th Anniversary. Our daughters are both in University. My father started the year in the hospital, but is now quite comfortable in a beautiful nursing home nearby to me.
During the summer, I biked to work every day … until I tore my achilles tendon in August playing squash. But after just 2 and a half months, that had pretty well repaired itself and I’m back to working out at lunch hour 3 times a week again.
On the sports scene, our local curling champ Jeff Stoughton won both the Canadian’s and the World’s. Our Canadian football team - the Winnipeg Blue Bombers - made it to the Grey Cup championship, and 2011 is the year we got our Winnipeg Jets back after being without a National Hockey League team for 15 years. The excitement in our city is overwhelming with guaranteed sellouts for at least 5 years.
This is also helping our city transform. People are moving downtown into newly built condos. We have a brand new airport that just opened in October. A new football stadium is nearing completion. The Human Rights museum is an amazing structure under construction that will become an iconic site of our city. Our major park and zoo is undergoing a $200 million renovation. In November, my friend Sandi Krawchenko Altner published “Ravenscraig”, her first book that highlights early Winnipeg from 1895 to 1915 when it was a booming town known as “the Chicago of the North”.
On the genealogy front, I’ve been working hard all year on Behold releasing 7 beta versions during the year followed by 3 full release versions. I’ve been involved with BetterGEDCOM adding my two cents worth, and developing ideas that will help both Behold and the genealogy community. I’ve blogged faithfully with 65 posts this year. My own genealogy … well … it’s still sitting there patiently waiting for me to get Version 2 of Behold out, so I can enter it all properly.
I hope everyone can reflect on the good from 2011 and I wish you all the best year possible for 2012.
