A few silly things got in the way of progress this weekend. First, while checking my Genealogy Software Links, I found one that used a discussion forum called Snitz. I followed it up and found it to be a very comprehensive Open Source ASP-based forum. That led me to at least two others that impressed me as well: Web Wiz and MegaBBS. I must have missed them when I looked earlier in the year and picked BroadBoard. Really, what I want is a simple discussion board that need not have the bells and whistles, but gets the job done. Actually, I’d sooner have a newsgroup (like TRichview), but that’s a topic for another time. After several hours of looking at all the Boards again, I really still like non-threaded discussions better. BroadBoard will be okay for now, although I still would like to do a few improvements to its interface, including allowing display of messages by date order, and ability to navigate more easily to the previous and next message. This will have wait for later when I have more time.
Then in Dick Eastman’s newsletter, he gives links to a few GEDCOMs with biblical information. That is a put-to-the-side-for-now hobby of mine, but I digressed and downloaded them and will use them for testing.
But then, when attempting to open up one of them with Behold from my “Internet Downloads” folder by double clicking on it, it wouldn’t open. The space in the “Internet Downloads” directory name caused it to break the path into 2 parameters when Delphi starts up. I searched the web for an hour for a solution to this, with the most commons solution being to put the pathname in quotes. Of course, when you are double clicking, it is the Windows Operating system that is passing the name and no quotes can be added. My trouble is I allow multiple parameters so that multiple GEDCOMs can be loaded at once. So some intelligent processing might have to be done if I want to kludge that correctly. This is something else that might have to wait until later.
