Literally Nothing From RootsMagic - Blog entry by lkessler - 11 Feb 2012

There I was at RootsTech sitting on a panel with Bruce Buzbee of RootsMagic as we were both panelists for the Sources, Citations, Metadata session. Little did I know the pain his RootsMagic program would soon be causing me. That same day, Bart Brenner, one of the four Behold users I met in person at the ...

Log File hyperlink - Forum post by lkessler in Questions and Answers - 10 Feb 2012

At the time, the way I hoped to implement this was to integrate both the log file and the GEDCOM file into Behold. It was a nice idea at the time, but I later decided that this was not important functionality needed by Behold. The log file need only be there for the people who were interested and needed to ...

Date format - GEDCOM 5.5.1 - Forum post by lkessler in Questions and Answers - 9 Feb 2012

Over at BetterGEDCOM, they're crossing the entire spectrum of dates, from simple to complex to international, so everything is being looked at. Personally, I don't think that GEDCOM did that bad a job at defining dates. I like the concept of date phrases for anything that isn't a standard date. A partial date ...

Date format - GEDCOM 5.5.1 - Forum post by lkessler in Questions and Answers - 9 Feb 2012

It is not correct to put 13 APR into GEDCOM. That is definitely illegal syntax. There is no "correct" or "not correct" regarding converting non-valid dates to a date phrase. It is my personal opinion that it is best to do so, so that the information entered is still associated with the date and is not lost. ...

Date format - GEDCOM 5.5.1 - Forum post by lkessler in Questions and Answers - 9 Feb 2012

The first four are invalid. You need the year to have a month and you need the year and the month to have the day. Behold will put the first 4 into parentheses, e.g. (13 APR) to make them a date phrase which is valid. The last two are both valid.

A Review of A Review - Blog comment by lkessler - 9 Feb 2012

Brett: I'm still making my last few changes to the event sorting. I have to put the children in birthdate order, and the spouses into marriage order. I'll be embedding them into the right place (date-wise) amongst all the events of an individual. Doing so just makes adding the consistency checking very ...

Behold Now Displays the Windows Compatible Logo (Finally!) - Blog entry by lkessler - 8 Feb 2012

You must be patient when waiting for Microsoft, as I had to be. But at last, Microsoft has posted at its Windows 7 Compatibility Center confirmation showing that Behold has attained Compatible with Windows 7 status. I’ve been talking about getting a logo certification for quite some time. You do have to make ...

A Review of A Review - Blog comment by lkessler - 8 Feb 2012

Thanks for that, Brett. You'll be interested to know that as a result of your earlier email to me, I reinvestigated consistency checking. With the addition of true date parsing and my implementation of that in version 1.0.1, this is now quite possible, and the setup of Behold makes it rather do-able. If I ...

A Review of A Review - Blog entry by lkessler - 7 Feb 2012

While I was at #RootsTech, I was surprised to find out that Tamura Jones did a review of Version 1.0 of Behold. I have said for a long time that Tamura writes the most comprehensive and accurate reviews of Genealogy software anywhere. Tamura has written full articles about Behold in the past:  Version ...
