2 DATE yes -> 2 DATE Y ?? - Forum post by lkessler in Feature Suggestions - 17 Mar 2015

GEDCOM's error checking is only "good" right now. It will get much better when I implement export to GEDCOM 5.5.1 because I'll have to ensure the export is completely valid. I also will be trying to do simple corrections to input when the GEDCOM is wrong, if it is obvious and non-ambiguous what the data was ...

Line length restriction - Forum post by arnold in Questions and Answers - 17 Mar 2015

I have just run into the same issue, but with text containing multi-byte UTF-8 characters. In this case, Behold 1.0.5.1 does not seem to count the characters correctly. It complains: 23580: 2 CONT hat gegenwärtig 750• Einwohner und war früher eine rein landwirtschaftlich orientierte Landgemeinde ...

2 DATE yes -> 2 DATE Y ?? - Forum post by arnold in Feature Suggestions - 17 Mar 2015

Just getting back to checking my own GEDCOM with Behold. In my early days, I added some lines such as: 2 DATE yes Currently Behold tells me: Behold will change this to a date phrase by adding parenthesis .... Perhaps it would be better to check for this and convert it to the acceptable 'Y', rather than a date ...

What might be a temprary alternative to Behold - Forum post by lkessler in General Discussion - 29 Nov 2014

Arnold, You said: "Surely a developer would only add input fields to his program if he had a way or the intention of outputing the data" No. The problem is that developers are first interested in storing their data in their own database. Exporting to GEDCOM is always a secondary thing, and they can easily miss ...

Date validation - case sensitive - Forum post by lkessler in Report a Problem - 29 Nov 2014

Arnold, Not too long after Version 1.1 is out I'll be adding Consistency checking, which should really give your data a shakedown. Following that, when I add saving to GEDCOM, I'm going to be implementing even better GEDCOM checking on input. Despite it's ambiguities, GEDCOM has been remarkably successful. ...

Add version to behold-setup.exe - Forum post by lkessler in Feature Suggestions - 29 Nov 2014

Arnold, Actually, you don't have to rename it. When you download the new version from the Behold download page where it says: "Click here to Download", it will ask if you want to Run or Save the file. If you select "Save As", you can conveniently name it with the version number when you save it. Louis

What might be a temprary alternative to Behold - Forum post by arnold in General Discussion - 29 Nov 2014

What you propose is a very thorough research project of comparing the major apps in this respect. The time and expertise needed for this I suspect is well above my level of experience and background. Even if only done with my current app, it will only get me so far because I suspect I would not necessarily ...

Date validation - case sensitive - Forum post by arnold in Report a Problem - 29 Nov 2014

Yes, isn't it nice to have a 'standard' ;-) The main reason I commented was because, before I found Behold, I had tried different validation apps to check my data and when I found nothing I thought was thorough enough - and also because the ones I did find disagreed with each other and the apps that produced ...

Add version to behold-setup.exe - Forum post by arnold in Feature Suggestions - 29 Nov 2014

I can see that from your side it is simpler, but from my side it'll mean that when I download a new version I will have to try and rename it to reflect the new version - because, from (bad) experience, I have found it never hurts to keep at least the current (and tested) version around .... just in case :-)

Add version to behold-setup.exe - Forum post by lkessler in Feature Suggestions - 29 Nov 2014

Arnold, I need the executable to be named behold-setup.exe since I can always guarantee that version to be the most recent version. I have links to that program elsewhere that require a fixed name. But thanks for pointing this out, I do see that the File Version displayed is 0.0.0.0 when you hover your mouse ...
