Microsoft’s Sky Drive - Blog entry by lkessler - 28 Jul 2012

About 5 years ago, I was very impressed when my best friend, who lives in Vancouver, sent me a link to his Picasa Web Album with photos of his trip online, a service provided by Google, I was able to view, comment on, and download the pictures, as were all the others he shared the files with. This was early on ...

Genealogy Cruise Program Now Posted - Blog entry by lkessler - 19 Jul 2012

The provisional program for the Unlock the Past Cruise (February 10 – 19, 2013) is now posted. It looks like a terrific program with about 150 sessions in the four lecture theatres in the Conference area of the ship. The conference area is reserved for our exclusive use on this cruise. I’m personally ...

Misleading message or Windows playing up? - Forum post by lkessler in Report a Problem - 14 Jul 2012

Brett: Behold's options are set up a bit differently than other programs. I did this early on in the development, and I thought it was very flexible, but most people stumble over it. I think I'm either going to have to explain it well in the documentation, or else I'll have to change it. None-the-less, here's ...

NAME with Level 2 tag - Forum post by lkessler in Questions and Answers - 14 Jul 2012

Brett, The DATE and PLAC tag are not allowed under a NAME tag. In GEDCOM, look up the PERSONAL_NAME_STRUCTURE. Behold doesn't yet check for tags in improper places. That check will be added when I do GEDCOM export and include a "perfect" GEDCOM 5.5.1 validator with it. Louis

GEDCOM Date format (again) - Forum post by lkessler in Questions and Answers - 14 Jul 2012

Brett: DAY := dd { Size 1:2 } dd is a numeric digit whose value is within the valid range of the days for the associated calendar month. My interpretation of GEDCOM is that both 03 and 3 are allowed. It does not say that leading zero's are not allowed. Behold reads both and allows 03 and does not give any ...

I Wanted a Camera with GPS, So I Got A SmartPhone - Blog entry by lkessler - 13 Jul 2012

I’ve written recently that I’ve been looking for a new camera with GPS capabilities. For a genealogist, the ability to capture the location of the gravestone, ancestral home or workplace of your relative will help you many times over. First, you will be able to find your way back to it. And anyone you give ...

Defining Life Events - Blog comment by lkessler - 6 Jul 2012

Thanks Goulooze, Aldfaer's display is interesting. I somewhat like Aldfaer's summary of a person, e.g.: "Fekje Damstra, 88, 1867-1955 (x1887, 7k)" which means: "lived to age 88, born 1867, died 1955, married 1887, had 7 children". But the Persoon tab is a bit minimalistic showing only: "6 zus Leentje ...

Defining Life Events - Blog entry by lkessler - 5 Jul 2012

I’ve pretty well got the mechanism working in Behold. Now it's a matter of finalizing what life events I want it to handle. Now what the heck are “Life Events”? My idea are that they are anything in a person’s life that is significant enough to change that person’s life in some real way, Often these ...

How To Get A Developer To Fix A Bug - Blog comment by lkessler - 28 Jun 2012

Brett: The last few things I'm doing in this version are significant, so the next version will be called 1.1. Still a few nuances I'm deciding on whether to handle or not. Here's one example. Your mother divorces your father. But a few years later they remarry. That's usually two different FAM records. ...

Thanks Bart. I'll try.
