Genealogy Software is Transforming - Blog comment by lkessler - 28 Nov 2014

Justin, I'm actually quite surprised to hear that. I'm not a big fish (yet) and they have been more than welcoming to me. I suggest trying in person at RootsTech if you're going this year and I presume you are. Stick around at the end of one of their talks or go to their booth in the exhibit hall. I think ...

Log file has problems with reporting problems with UTF-8 .ged - Forum post by lkessler in Report a Problem - 27 Nov 2014

Arnold, I found the problem. When the BOM and the Character set used mismatch, I have to do a conversion. I did not do the conversion on the full input line, but just to the extracted parts of the line. So the input line was still incorrect when displayed in the error message. I've now fixed it so that the ...

Genealogy Software is Transforming - Blog entry by lkessler - 27 Nov 2014

You likely might not have caught the relevance of the two announcements made on Monday and Tuesday that rocked the genealogy software world. On November 24, MyHeritage announced: Family Historian Genealogy Software Integrates MyHeritage Matching Technologies for Automated Discoveries. And the next day, ...

Log file has problems with reporting problems with UTF-8 .ged - Forum post by lkessler in Report a Problem - 26 Nov 2014

Arnold, Thank you for adding the PS. I find I can now recreate the problem as it does occur with a UTF-8 file that does not have a BOM. Now you don't have to send me anything. I'll work to fix it now. Louis p.s. I hate computer problems. I hope yours get solved without you losing anything significant.

Log file has problems with reporting problems with UTF-8 .ged - Forum post by lkessler in Report a Problem - 25 Nov 2014

Thanks, Arnold, for reporting this. But I can't reproduce the problem. When I try copying your long line you show above into a UTF-8 GEDCOM file, it doesn't happen for me. The log file is fine. That may be because when you copied the line to this forum, your browser converted it to Unicode and it became a ...

Source Driven Genealogy - Blog comment by lkessler - 25 Nov 2014

Excellent Arnold. Of course, Behold does not yet have the editing and the source-based editing option in it. I've still not finalized it yet, but my current thinking is to have a split screen showing you the source at the top or bottom, and your conclusions at the bottom or top. But you can see in ...

Newly Rediscovered: GEDCOM 4.0 (and a bonus!) - Blog entry by lkessler - 16 Nov 2014

Trying to write a flexible GEDCOM reader to read in every flavour of GEDCOM back to the early days is rather difficult when the standards used prior to version 5.3 from 1993 just aren’t available anywhere. I have scoured the Internet and the Internet archives for that matter, to try to dig up some of the ...

Announcing GEDCOM File Finder - Blog comment by lkessler - 16 Nov 2014

Thanks, Enno. The Geneanet article was Genealogy Software Updates of the Week 6 November 2014. It's good to know GEDCOM File Finder works on Wine. Would it be possible for you to add a software entry at WineHQ for it, sort of like my Behold entry?

Source-Based Thinking - Blog entry by lkessler - 11 Nov 2014

It’s time genealogists stopped their conclusion-based thinking and started going source-based. Source-Based Document Organization Source-Based Data Entry Standardizing Sources and now Repository-Based To Do Lists (Do you think there’s a not-so-subtle theme here?) I advocate that everything is better ...
