How Safe Are Your Credit Cards? - Blog entry by lkessler - 26 Dec 2014

I, like anyone, am concerned when I type in credit card information online. We’ve all heard of a rash of hacks into online databases such as Target a year ago and Home Depot in September. So it didn’t surprise me to hear about a crackdown on security measures to ensure that your credit data is made safe. ...

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions - Blog comment by lkessler - 23 Dec 2014

Dave, If a new standard to replace GEDCOM comes out, I expect programs will be written to convert GEDCOM to the new standard. Most of the incompatible versions of GEDCOM will also likely get converters to turn them into good-enough GEDCOM that the converters to the new standard will work. Then new programs ...

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions - Blog entry by lkessler - 19 Dec 2014

We approach the end of December. I look back to the beginning of the year when I said, in fact I even made a new year’s resolution on this blog, that this year I’d get the next few versions of Behold out. Well, that didn’t happen. There were a few personal issues that I had to attend to, especially my ...

What might be a temprary alternative to Behold - Forum post by lkessler in General Discussion - 29 Nov 2014

Arnold, You said: "Surely a developer would only add input fields to his program if he had a way or the intention of outputing the data" No. The problem is that developers are first interested in storing their data in their own database. Exporting to GEDCOM is always a secondary thing, and they can easily miss ...

Date validation - case sensitive - Forum post by lkessler in Report a Problem - 29 Nov 2014

Arnold, Not too long after Version 1.1 is out I'll be adding Consistency checking, which should really give your data a shakedown. Following that, when I add saving to GEDCOM, I'm going to be implementing even better GEDCOM checking on input. Despite it's ambiguities, GEDCOM has been remarkably successful. ...

Add version to behold-setup.exe - Forum post by lkessler in Feature Suggestions - 29 Nov 2014

Arnold, Actually, you don't have to rename it. When you download the new version from the Behold download page where it says: "Click here to Download", it will ask if you want to Run or Save the file. If you select "Save As", you can conveniently name it with the version number when you save it. Louis

Add version to behold-setup.exe - Forum post by lkessler in Feature Suggestions - 29 Nov 2014

Arnold, I need the executable to be named behold-setup.exe since I can always guarantee that version to be the most recent version. I have links to that program elsewhere that require a fixed name. But thanks for pointing this out, I do see that the File Version displayed is 0.0.0.0 when you hover your mouse ...

What might be a temprary alternative to Behold - Forum post by lkessler in General Discussion - 29 Nov 2014

I've now added a question on genealogy.stackexchange.com: How Complete is GEDCOM Export from Various Programs?

What might be a temprary alternative to Behold - Forum post by lkessler in General Discussion - 29 Nov 2014

Arnold, That's a very good question. Whatever program you use, I would suggest you pick one that will export to its GEDCOM every single item it allows you to enter on any of its forms. The test would be to put some dummy data into every possible input field (maybe use the name of the input field so you can ...

Date validation - case sensitive - Forum post by lkessler in Report a Problem - 29 Nov 2014

Arnold, I think I've flip flopped again back to Tamura's view and your view. Despite my doubts about this, I think I'm going to have to allow any case in the line value without giving a warning message. This is extra work for the programmer implementing GEDCOM, because the line value case must be retained for ...
