The RootsTech Syllabi - Blog comment by baerbelj56 - 30 Jan 2014

Hi, I was really looking forward to your class because I own a Windows phone. However, I will need to cover the B-1 counter at the Library instead. So if I fill out the survey and e-mail it to you, will you share your class information with me? Baerbel

How many sources/citations is too many? - Blog comment by cp - 19 Jan 2014

Interesting thoughts, as usual My solution is to record and process all my sources and reasoning in a dedicated program (I'm actually using GenQuiry, but did look at Evidentia as well). Such a program can be used in so many different workflows, but my aim is to end up with a single 'conclusion' document that ...

How many sources/citations is too many? - Blog comment by lkessler - 29 Dec 2013

I agree with what you say, and you're doing a great job with GenQuiry. I don't know if I'd say we're "diametrically opposite". The design of Behold is to eventually allow source-based data entry, which few programs do. I would not say I'm as interested in the "proof" side of it as I am in the documentation ...

How many sources/citations is too many? - Blog comment by colevalleygirl - 29 Dec 2013

Louis, I think you're conflating process and outputs. The **process** of conducting effective and thorough family history research requires every relevant piece of information in each source consulted to be analysed for the evidence it might provide to support an assertion about an individual. Different ...

How many sources/citations is too many? - Blog comment by lkessler - 28 Dec 2013

Jan, So why go through all that extra work and clutter it up for yourself? It isn't necessary. What is necessary is to have every source documented so that they can be found again. Linking the source once per person is all that is necessary. It need not be linked from multiple events or numerous ...

How many sources/citations is too many? - Blog comment by janmurphy - 28 Dec 2013

The problem comes about because there are many steps to the process, and we're all describing different parts, like the blind men all touching a different part of the elephant. Lineage-linked databases are being pressed into service as our main research repositories, and few if any have tools for evidence ...

Random Tidbits - Blog comment by lkessler - 20 Oct 2013

Keith, I didn't mean to belittle the significance of the shutdown. But other than Susan Kitchens who was mad because NASA closed up, I don't recall any other genealogy bloggers mention the shutdown. For the genealogists at least, it just seemed to be business as usual, and that's what I was referring ...

Thanks for the update--sounds like you've been busy. Regarding the US federal government partial shutdown, those of you outside the US may not have noticed unless you follow the news or financial markets, but most of us here in America noticed or were directly affected by it. We couldn't go to national parks or ...

Features Creep, Part 2 - Blog comment by lkessler - 18 Oct 2013

If I could figure out a good way of enabling plug-ins in Behold, I'll definitely do that. I'm keeping my eyes open for ways to do that in Delphi and the way Behold is programmed. What may be more possible is that the future database Behold will use will likely by SQLite (same database as RootsMagic, but the ...

Features Creep, Part 2 - Blog comment by cp - 12 Sep 2013

Well, you are both right, you are both wrong! Bad design does hold back otherwise good feature enhancements and lead to allegations of bloatware. But... extending your argument, you might as well have one MS Office program that does EVERYTHING!!! so long as it has a Ribbon to just show the most common ...
