Sometimes It Works … But Not Always - Blog entry by lkessler - 6 Jun 2015

Didn’t quite make my self-imposed May 31 deadline. It was a busy week. I also got caught up in the attempt to add one last improvement into this version. I just can’t help myself. Yes, I know it’s better to get the version out first and then add the improvements later. But as I came to a screenshot I ...

Recording Your Reasoning (Proof Argument) - Blog comment by lkessler - 1 Jun 2015

Yes, you can get infinite loops. It normally isn't a problem for a program like Behold that may expand one level, but otherwise gives everything as links to the other structure. With links, you'll click on one to go to the other. And then, you'll click on the other and go back to the first. But any program ...

Recording Your Reasoning (Proof Argument) - Blog entry by lkessler - 28 May 2015

So I was about to to update the documentation section for Source Details, and I looked at how I had implemented this in version 1.0: Version 1.1 was unchanged from this, so I thought the update of this section would be simple. But then it struck me. I was not displaying this information correctly. In the ...

Documenting New Features - Blog entry by lkessler - 23 May 2015

This is fun. I’m well into updating the Tutorial. I like my documentation system Dr. Explain which makes it easy to provide screenshots using callouts and makes a extremely nice user manual. I’m working hard to finish as soon as possible. I would really like to get Version 1.1 out before the end of the ...

Is GEDCOM Good For Sources? - Blog comment by lkessler - 22 May 2015

Arnold, In the earlier days, GEDCOM's sources weren't as well developed. I happen to have a small booklet called "PAF Documentation Guidelines, 1995 Edition", produced by the Silicon Valley PAF Users Group. They didn't think PAF's ability to document sources was good enough. They went a step further and ...

GEDCOM Death of Spouse - Blog entry by lkessler - 20 May 2015

As I was writing up my documentation for the release of Behold 1.1, I discovered a weird GEDCOM construct used in one of the sample GEDCOM files, Steve McCarthy Legacy.ged, that I supply with Behold. The file was created by Legacy version 5.0, and the weird construct is this: 0 @F3@ FAM 1 MARR 2 ...

At Last! Finally! All 1.1 changes appear done! - Blog entry by lkessler - 17 May 2015

This has taken way too long and so much longer than I ever expected. It’s now almost two years since the last release of Behold (version 1.0.5.1). And it was earlier than that when I started developing my concept of Life Events as I first described in my Endless Possibilities post over 3 years ago. But ...

Is GEDCOM Good For Sources? - Blog comment by lkessler - 16 May 2015

Enno, I am fine with any simple method as you suggest, but we don't want a standard that is a huge elaborate complicated mess. The point is that GEDCOM may not be the best, but it is able to handle sources despite the statements of many people that it cannot. Louis

Is GEDCOM Good For Sources? - Blog entry by lkessler - 7 May 2015

My interest was tweaked earlier today by a discussion between Tony Proctor and Nick Hall on the mailing list for the FHISO Sources-Citations Exploratory Group. In particular, Nick made the following statement: The problem with GEDCOM is that it heavily restricts the types of source that can be easily ...

Thanks for posting that Claire, I didn't even know about Playonmac until your post. I'll update the Behold FAQ. Louis
