SQLite for Genealogy Software - Blog comment by lkessler - 24 Apr 2016

Thanks for your comments Keith. Then I suppose you'll never use a tool like RootsMagic, because its database is open and someone might get the .rmgc file from your computer and read it. And you'll never make a GEDCOM of all your data and never send that data to anyone (at least not with your living people ...

SQLite for Genealogy Software - Blog entry by lkessler - 23 Apr 2016

An article by Keith Riggle yesterday: “Where Are the Free Family Tree Maker Updates” caught my attention. Keith indicated that the Family Tree Maker database was based on the SQLite database software. That surprised me. SQLite is a multi-platform, speedy, single file database with a small footprint ...

Not so Simple Mail Transfer Protocol - Blog comment by lkessler - 31 Mar 2016

Sachin, I was actually impressed by Pepipost's responsiveness on Twitter, and it very much seemed to me that your company is actively trying to engage with your customers and potential customers. I do have to admit that the one bad tweet I mention above did get me looking at the other services and I did try ...

Looking for a Genealogy Program that Will Be Around for a Long Time - Blog comment by lkessler - 29 Mar 2016

Kevin: That's an awesome example of preservation gone very wrong. There are some great comments on that article as well. Speaking of time capsules, 10 yrs ago I submitted my name and it's on the NASA New Horizons spacecraft that flew by Pluto last year with the names of 434,737 others. ...

@Sparkpost to the rescue. As I recently mentioned, it’s been over 4 years since my last Behold Newsletter. This was something that I really had intended to get going again. In 2010, I was having trouble with the mailing service that I had been using, and I started looking for a new one. Back then I selected ...

Ancestral Birthplace Chart - Blog comment by lkessler - 28 Mar 2016

Uwe: True country-wise. But if I did it by town name, it would be boring again.

Ancestral Birthplace Chart - Blog entry by lkessler - 26 Mar 2016

This seems to be the current meme going around. Put together an ancestral birthplace chart of the states and countries your ancestors are from. Many people have very interesting and diverse backgrounds. Not me. Mine’s not too exciting: And my wife’s is even less so:

Behold Version 1.2.1 - Blog entry by lkessler - 23 Mar 2016

I just released a new version of Behold which contains lots of little adjustments and fixes to the display of facts that was finalized in Version 1.2.  I recommend you upgrade when you get a chance. Unless you had the old version 1.2 running alongside, you might not even think that anything is changed. ...

The Worst Type of Programming Bug - Blog entry by lkessler - 12 Mar 2016

We programmers try very hard to keep our programs free of bugs. The bad bugs are the ones that make our programs crash producing a system error, or make our programs freeze requiring the use of Task Manager to end the task. An example of a simple way in my programming language Delphi to make the program crash ...

How to Program Dates for Genealogy - Blog comment by lkessler - 9 Mar 2016

Thanks, Mervyn. That helps my understanding. Quaker dates are not supported by GEDCOM, so they'd have to be put as a date phrase in parenthesis. But a smart program would be able to interpret them from the date phrase.
