The New Chromosome Browser Results File at FTDNA - Blog entry by lkessler - 21 Oct 2018

A few days ago, Family Tree DNA released a new version of its chromosome browser. There are other people that have already described the improvements, including Kitty Cooper and Roberta Estes, but I’d like to focus on one item that’s changed that affects Double Match Triangulator users. New Link to ...

Today at the #kdgs2018 in Kelowna B.C. was a full slate of talks in 4 time slots, 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon, with 7 speakers to choose from in each time slot. Kelowna District Genealogy Conference Day 1 - Blog entry by lkessler - 28 Sep 2018

It was a good day at #kdgs2018 here in Kelowna, B.C. The venue during the day was the beautiful Kelowna district library downtown. The second floor of the library contains two full rows of shelves that are the reference materials belonging to the Kelowna District Genealogical Society. I’m sure there are ...

WeGene is a Chinese company that up to now has done DNA testing in Shenzhen, China. They have grown to about 300,000 customers. GEDCOM 1 Lives! - Blog comment by lkessler - 17 Sep 2018

Wow! That's great news Phillip. Since I retired, programming for genealogy and DNA analysis has more than filled my need for having new challenges and aspirations. I hope you also enjoy the process and get FHS to be the program you always wanted it to be. p.s. I tweeted your news, and included an image of ...

The Benefits of Combining Your DNA Raw Data - Blog entry by lkessler - 17 Sep 2018

In my last post, I compared the raw data from 5 DNA testing companies. I ended that article by describing how I then took my 5 sets of raw data and combined them into a more complete set. I ended up with a file that contained 1,389,750 different SNPs of which just 20,688 (1.5%) were no-calls. I then described ...

GEDCOM 1 Lives! - Blog comment by pebrown25 - 17 Sep 2018

Just some notes about GEDCOM 1.1 in the Family History System. That format can still be produced with the latest (Windows specific) version of FHS...as well as PAF2.0, PAF 2.1, LDS 5.5 and a Custom version that adds custom tags to LDS 5.5 that allow exporting FHS data fields that were not formally supported in ...

Comparing Raw Data from 5 DNA Testing Companies - Blog comment by vanlaargen - 8 Sep 2018

Hi Louis, I just used DNA Kit Studio to merge my mothers’ Ancestry, 23andMEv3, MyHeritage and LivingDNA kits. The resulting file was 39.5MB. A strange quirk, there seems to be a chromosome 25, but after checking some of them on DBSNP they all seemed to be on the X or and on the PAR region of the Y. I ...

Comparing Raw Data from 5 DNA Testing Companies - Blog comment by lkessler - 2 Sep 2018

Winz: Yes, AA means father is A and mother is A at that position. I can’t answer your 2nd question yet, because I don’t currently know much about what the whole genome results will provide. I have taken Big Y-500, so hopefully I’ll learn enough to be able to see if I can compare the results in some way.

Comparing Raw Data from 5 DNA Testing Companies - Blog comment by lkessler - 2 Sep 2018

Vanlaargen. Thanks for the advance warning. Yes, sometimes these company’s time estimates are only as good as a programmer’s time estimates are. :-)
